Motion Pro - Shock Spanner Punch

Motion Pro Shock Spanner Punch

The Motion Pro Shock Spanner Punch (08-0483) is a specialized shop tool designed to quickly adjust rear shock preload lock rings without damaging delicate aluminum threads or rounding off lock nut notches. Modern rear motorcycle shocks utilize threaded aluminum lock rings that are notoriously difficult to adjust with standard hook spanners due to tight frame clearances, exhaust pipe interference, and crowded airboxes.

Constructed from brass, the punch tip is deliberately softer than the aluminum or steel preload rings found on rear shocks. This material difference ensures that force applied via hammer strikes drives the ring smoothly around the shock body without burring, gouging, or damaging the adjustment notches. The tool features a heavy-duty steel shaft with a textured, non-slip knurled grip that gives technicians precise tool control when striking in tight swingarm cradles.

Features:

  • Non-Marring Brass Tip: Brass end absorbs hammer impact force and turns shock rings without rounding, burring, or damaging aluminum or steel preload collars.

  • Tight Clearance Access: Slim profile reaches deep into tight frame cradles, subframe junctions, and airbox cavities where traditional hook spanner wrenches cannot fit.

  • Heavy-Duty Steel Body: High-tensile steel shaft withstands repeated hammer strikes without flexing or bending.

  • Textured Handle: Textured surface treatment provides a secure, non-slip grip even when hands are covered in grease or fork oil.

  • Universal Utility: Designed for adjusting preload, sag, and locking rings on all dirt bike, dual-sport, and adventure motorcycle rear shocks.

What's in the Box:

  • 1x Motion Pro Shock Spanner Punch (Part #08-0483)

Application Notes:

  • Usage Method: Position the soft brass tip flush into one of the notches on the shock preload lock ring. Tap the striking end of the steel shaft with a brass or dead-blow hammer to loosen or tighten the ring.

  • Tip Maintenance: Over time, the brass tip will naturally deform as it protects your shock rings. File or dress the brass tip flat using a hand file to maintain a crisp, square edge for optimal notch engagement.

  • Why Brass Matters: Mechanics frequently attempt to adjust rear shock preload using a standard steel drift punch or flathead screwdriver. Steel-on-aluminum impact immediately shears the notches off the aluminum locking ring, throwing metal shavings down onto the shock body threads. Once these aluminum shavings get caught in the fine threads, the lock ring will gall and lock up completely, requiring complete shock disassembly or body replacement. The brass tip on the Motion Pro punch deforms before damaging the aluminum, keeping your shock threads pristine.

  • Proper Preload Adjustment Procedure: Always clean the threaded shock body with contact cleaner and a nylon brush to remove dirt, sand, and chain lube before adjusting preload. Once clean, spray a light lubricant (such as WD-40 or silicone spray) on the threads. Use the Motion Pro punch to back off the top locking ring first, adjust the main spring preload ring to your target race sag specification, and then drive the top locking ring back down securely against the main ring.
