The SKF Mud Scraper Kit (KIT-MS49S) is an external suspension protection system engineered specifically for 49mm Showa inverted (USD) forks. In wet, clay, or sandy conditions, wet roost and mud adhere to exposed fork stanchions and dry rapidly between suspension strokes. As the fork compresses, this hardened crust is forced directly past the factory dust wiper and into the oil seal, cutting the delicate elastomer sealing lips, scoring the stanchion coating, and causing oil weeping.
Manufactured from SKF's proprietary low-friction thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), the KIT-MS49S kit acts as a sacrificial primary barrier that mechanically shears dried mud, abrasive silt, and sand away from the chrome tubes before contaminants reach the OEM seals. The scrapers feature a two-piece split design that installs directly onto the lower fork stanchions without disassembling the fork legs, dropping the forks from the triple clamps, or removing the front wheel.

Fork Specification: Fits all modern inverted (USD) 49mm Showa front forks.
Incompatible Systems: Does not fit 48mm Showa forks, 49mm KYB forks, or WP 48mm suspension units due to differing outer tube step profiles and lower lug clearances.
Wet-Condition Deployment vs. Dry-Condition Removal: SKF Mud Scrapers are designed primarily for wet, muddy, sandy, or deep loam conditions. While the TPU material is formulated for low sliding friction, leaving them installed during dry, hard-pack conditions adds unnecessary sliding drag to the fork stroke and allows airborne dust to accumulate inside the scraper cavity. Remove the scrapers during dry summer riding and reinstall them trackside when wet conditions arise.
Pin Bending & Fork Guard Clearance: After sliding the two halves together over the stanchion and securing the stainless steel cotter pins through the locator holes, bend the pin tails fully flush against the scraper body. If the pin ends protrude outward, they can snag and score the inner face of the plastic fork guards as the suspension cycles through deep travel. Verify that the inner surface of the OEM fork guards clears the scraper circumference smoothly across the entire stroke.
Post-Ride Service: After power-washing the bike, remove the scrapers by pulling the split pins. Wipe away any trapped moisture, fine silt, or cleaning detergent that may have collected between the top edge of the scraper and the OEM dust wiper. Reapply a light mist of silicone spray or suspension fluid to the stanchion before final reassembly.
