Motion Pro Bearing Driver Kit

The Motion Pro Wheel Bearing Driver Set (08-0551) is a specialized installation tool designed for seating sealed deep-groove metric ball bearings with 12 mm to 25 mm inner diameters (I.D.) and 32 mm to 47 mm outer diameters (O.D.). Standard generic drivers or makeshift socket presses often cock the bearing within the hub bore or transfer impact energy directly through the rolling balls and raceways—causing raceway brinelling, cage fatigue, and immediate seal failure.

Constructed around a heavy-duty knurled carbon steel strike handle and CNC-machined, anodized aluminum adapters, the 08-0551 set uses a two-piece pilot and driver configuration. The inner pilot enters the bearing bore to maintain concentric alignment, while the outer driver disc contacts strictly the outer bearing race. This configuration ensures driving energy is applied squarely to the bearing shell without contacting delicate rubber dust seals or side-loading the internal ball complement. The tool can be driven using a dead-blow mallet or placed in a hydraulic bench press for controlled installation.

Features:

  • Two-Piece Alignment Geometry: Combines an inner pilot guide with an outer race driver to maintain concentricity and drive bearings square into hub bores.

  • Bearing & Seal Protection: Applies driving force exclusively against the outer steel race, preventing impact shock from transmitting through internal ball bearings and elastomer seals.

  • Broad Bearing Coverage: Accommodates metric ball bearings ranging from 12 mm to 25 mm inner diameter and 32 mm to 47 mm outer diameter.

  • Knurled Steel Striking Handle: Heavy-duty carbon steel handle withstands repeated hammer strikes or arbor press ram contact without mushrooming.

  • Billet Anodized Aluminum Adapters: CNC-machined 6061 aluminum driver discs and pilots prevent marring or gouging precision-machined hub bores.

  • Laser-Etched Markings: Clearly labeled metric sizing on every adapter allows fast size identification on the workbench.

  • Quick-Change Modular Setup: Adapters assemble and swap quickly via an included countersunk retaining fastener.

  • Protective Storage Case: Ships in a durable blow-molded case with dedicated organization slots for the handle, retaining bolt, and nine driver components.

  • Vehicle Compatibility: Services front and rear wheel bearings, sprocket carrier bearings, and swingarm/linkage bearings across all modern Japanese and European dirt bikes, dual-sports, and adventure motorcycles (KTM, Husqvarna, GASGAS, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Beta, Sherco).

  • Why Driver Contact Area Dictates Bearing Life: When installing a bearing into a housing bore (such as a motorcycle wheel hub), the press-fit interference exists entirely between theouter bearing race and the aluminum hub. Pressing or hammering against theinner race forces the installation load across the internal ball bearings and into the raceway shoulder. This causes micro-indentations (brinelling) in the race surface, resulting in rough rotation and rapid failure. The Motion Pro 08-0551 adapter pairs an outer ring that contacts solely the outer race with a loose-clearance center pilot that maintains alignment without binding on the inner race.

  • Listening for the Solid "Thud": When driving bearings into a motorcycle hub with a dead-blow hammer, strike squarely on the center of the steel handle. As the bearing travels down the bore, each hammer blow produces a dull, hollow sound. The exact instant the outer race seats against the hub’s internal stop shoulder, the audible pitch changes to a sharp, solid "thud" and the hammer rebounds firmly. Stop driving immediately at this sound change; continuing to pound on a fully seated bearing will pinch the inner spacer tube, preload the inner races, or damage the aluminum stop shoulder.

  • Thermal Assembly Procedure: To minimize the force required to seat bearings and eliminate the risk of shaving aluminum off the hub bore, utilize thermal expansion. Clean the hub bore and warm the outside of the aluminum wheel hub with a heat gun to approximately 150°F–180°F. Place the new sealed bearings in a freezer for 30–45 minutes prior to installation. Lubricate the hub bore with a light film of waterproof grease; the chilled bearing will typically drop halfway or fully to the bottom shoulder by hand, requiring only light finishing taps with the 08-0551 driver to confirm full seating.
